Ken and Joy Hoffman - Founders

Picture
We are Ken and Joy Hoffman. Between the two of us we have over 30 years of experience teaching in California's public schools. We have recently moved to Lusaka, Zambia in Africa and teach at the American International School of Lusaka. It didn't take long for us to witness the disparity between those with and those without the opportunity for education and a high quality of life. The dire conditions of people who live in the housing compounds are hard to imagine. The Bauleni Housing Compound is home to approximately 20,000 people. We have made it our mission to help provide both quality education and quality of life to those orphans and vulnerable children in Bauleni who currently have no opportunity for either. Please contact us anytime: e-mail: info@rhoa.us

Mary Gomo - Director

Picture
Meet Mary Gomo:
Mary is our School Director.
We were so fortunate to meet Mary when she became a part-time housekeeper for us. It took no time at all to find that Mary's calling was not to keep someone's house, but rather to help the children that live in the Bauleni Housing Compound, where she has lived for 35 years. Mary has a heart of gold and does what she can on her meager wages to help shelter and feed some of the orphans that live near her. Mary is our direct contact to the neediest children in Bauleni. She works tirelessly each day helping to educate, feed and care for these beautiful kids and their families.

Fanny - Teacher

Meet Fanny:
Fanny is Mary's sister. She teaches Science, Spelling and Grammar. She loves these children and has always wanted to be a teacher. We have been able to help Fanny begin Teacher School. She now works at RHO Appleseed and attends schools each afternoon. She is very excited about attaining her Teaching Certificate. Fanny has been with us since we began on Saturday mornings. She is dedicated to the children and we are very lucky to have her!

Febby

Picture
Febby joined us about 6 months ago. She is our Early Childhood Education teacher.

These ladies are the people who make 'school' happen for these children each day. Ken and I provide basic plans and supplies that we can, and we give our time on Saturdays. Mary, Fanny and are currently volunteering their time. They know that when we can, we will pay them for their services. All three of these women live lives that are harder and more deprived than most average Americans can imagine, yet they have a fierce desire to help those who are less fortunate then themselves. We have truly come to love them.

Masau Phiri - Facilities Manager

Picture
Meet Masau:
Masau is the groundskeeper/gardener for the townhomes at the American School. He is widely considered to be one of the best gardeners around, and he has started working at Appleseed School on the weekends. He has drawn up designs for the outdoor spaces at the school, and he is excited to help us with this project. There is no doubt that Masau could be a top landscape designer, and we look forward to watching the grounds come to life.
